Signing Up
A couple weeks ago I signed up for an online pet portrait class through one of the photo supply stores I buy stuff from.   I’ve been looking at their class line up for a while but this is the first one I’ve actually registered for.  It is a 4 week pet portrait class.  It comes complete with lessons and homework.   You post your photos for each assigment on the class site for the instructor to critique.

The instructor is a professional photographer out of Phoenix.   Check out her website – she is really good.  http://www.visualharmonyphotography.com/

Week 1 : My First Assignment
The first assignment was to use only natural light; sunlight, lamps, etc.  I had to do 1 indoor, 1 outdoor and 1 photo in either environment.   I was so excited to get started I snapped off almost 700 photos in less than a week, then had to whittle it down to 3 to submit.   The goal is to create portraits not snapshots.  Wow this taking a real class is a lot of FUN.

Here are the 3 I submitted for my assignment.

Jill (the instructor) liked my photos.   She liked the light and posing.  She had some comments to help improve them as well.   She suggested using a reflector to fill in some of the darker areas for Zazu and Nemo.  Also not cut off Nemos feet.   For the Merlin photo she suggested brightening the photo – it’s a bit underexposed.
In the process I got a few more that I really liked but didn’t make the 3…
Week 2 – this week

In week 2 we’re allowed to add light using a flash and/or reflector.  For this lesson I broke out my backgrounds and lighting setup.  Not sure what I’m going to submit yet but here are some of the candidates.   The assignment is to use 1 or more of the lighting technics described in the lesson for the 3 photos.  The photos need to be 1 head, 1 full body and 1 3/4 body shots.  I also can only use my own pets for 2 of the 3 photos.

This one for sure…

These are some other candidates

His tail is missing so probably not this one.

and these are just fun….

Will add the next installment for this journal when I get my submissions figured out.   I still need to do another animal…. going to check with Vicky to see if it would be ok to photo Simon, Toby or Emily.
