ASSIGNMENT 3 – WEEK 3 – It’s All About the Lights

Assignment Complete

This weeks assignment was all about setting up studio lighting and formal backgrounds.  The lesson talked about single and dual strobe set ups, where to put them and how calibrate them for proper lighting.

We had to 3 1 close-up, 1 profile and 1 full body and 1 of the shots had to be with someone else’s pet.

I shot a friends cat; Simon with a 2 strobe set-up.   One used a softbox and the second bouncing out of an umbrella.  Simon’s fur is very white so it was a challenge to set the lighting so I’d get a good exposure.   I ended up getting quite a few bad shots.   He was pretty good about the whole thing.   For a while he even lounged in the middle of the table where we had everything set up.   I was pretty amazed.  When he was done – he was done.

The background was actually black but the final image looked too flat so I photoshoped some highlights in.
The 2nd session I did after work.   Came home all excited – I’d gotten a new brown painted background from EBay and wanted to try it out.   Took me a while to get everything all set up – this background is huge (10×20 feet) – too big for our living room.  I set up a 2 stobe + reflector environment.   I put a footstool in for the cats to sit on.  Once it was ready, the lights were calibrated, the throne was ready I went looking for Merlin, Nemo or Zazu.   They didn’t want to have anything to do with it – they were hiding under the dining room table and watching me from distance.   I took me 20 minutes to convince them to come out and play.  In the end the footstool had to go.   I replaced it with the cat tree and ran the laser pointer up and down the tree to get the furry ones to come into the light.   It was a long road but the results were worth it.
For the final shot for this weeks assignment I used natural lighting with a small silver reflector.   I got up early and was able to capture that nice early morning sun through the front windows.   It was a little be cloudy so the light was more diffused.   I got Zazu playing on one of the green chairs.
They were all three into playing but this was the best shot.
One more week to go.   I got the last lesson and assigment Friday and the photos are due next Sunday.   More as I get the last ones together….
