ASSIGNMENT 2 – WEEK 2

Assigment Complete

Week 2 assignment is complete, submitted and critiqued.   All told I shot over 600 photos and got 46 that liked although not all 46 would really be concidered good portraits.   It’s still taking a lot of time to set up and get the light right.   I’m still getting a lot of bad exposures – I’ve not quite mastered the art of metering in the right part of the scene to get a proper exposure.   It was a lot easier to set the camera to “P” and shoot away but the results when it’s right are not as good.

Here are my 3 for this week and the feedback.   The first is an image of Zazu.   It was shot in the early morning with the sun streaming in the living room window.   I used a silver reflector to help fill in some of the shadows.

This is actually a crop of a larger image.   I liked the dramatic feel when it’s cropped down.   Here is the original.
The instructor liked both images.
The 2nd image was taken at the same time – early morning.  [Yes I know I'm not a early morning person but I seem to be catching the sunrise a lot the last couple of weeks - maybe because of the time change.]   I used the silver reflector again to illuminate Merlins left side, leg and tail.

Here Jill liked the photo – said it captured “classic cat body language”.  She recommended that to take the image to the next reshoot it with a white reflector rather than silver and only fill the shadows on the left side of his face and leg – then let the body fade in the dark shadows.   Going to try this.
Final shot for the week had to be someone elses pet.   Vicky was kind and let me shoot their cats.  I used this photo of Emily for my 3rd submission.
Emily wasn’t into the whole getting your picture taken gig.   I only got a few shots off before she bolted.  We got her attention with a bit of string.   The setup was a speedlight on a stand with a softbox to diffuse the light and light coming in the window.  I’d set up a black background to bring out her colors.
Jill comments here were – the light is good, she liked the composition.   Next step try another color background.
All for tonight.  More next week.
